Chapter 17 â Idol Worship
Eva spent Saturday resting and enjoying some time with Millie and her friends, despite the festival being underway in the city. One of the most important things most idols learned early on was that overworking is a great recipe for injuries, and after a stressful week of intense training, Eva needed a break.
But that evening, as the daylight waned and the shadows lengthened, she felt up to something a little more strenuous than sitting in bed and holding hands with Millie. The city still heaved as the thousands of guests and tourists and hangers-on walked the streets, enjoying the various festivities.
Among said festivities, one of the main influences from Japan was in full swing everywhere they looked; festival booths and stands lining the streets and selling every kind of food imaginable, similar to the evening out Isla and Anise had enjoyed a few days after arriving on Aida.
They stopped at the first stand they came to and Eva immediately entered what Anise thought of as a foodgasm. Surveying the delectable spread of chocolate bananas, candy apples, brandy snaps, and other dripping and sweet things, she virtually drooled.
Millie giggled. âWould you like me to choose for you? Seems youâre having some trouble deciding.â
âI think Iâll be okay, thanks,â Eva replied. She glanced at the apples, shook her head. Then the brandy snaps, and again a head shake. Then the choco bananas. A decisive nod this time. She ordered three.
Islaâs eyes widened. âYou donât mess about when it comes to food, do you?â
âNot normally, but when itâs a festival Iâll enjoy going a bit overboard sometimes,â Eva said. âEspecially after such a wonderful experience last night.â
The others ordered something each, a candy apple and two choco-bananas for Anise, a chocolate banana for Millie, and Isla added in a couple of brandy snaps, something she had become slightly addicted to since arriving on Aida. Fizzy drinks were obtained, then they sauntered down the line of stands, sampling their items.
Eva plainly enjoyed chocolate bananas. âMmâ¦!â She took a deep draught of the fizzy drink she had acquired. âAaah, it feels like a marina of mermaids having a party in my mouth!â
The perceived temperature rose, indicating at least one of them was embarrassed at this utterance.
Eva coughed. âUm, sorry, that was a bit weird, wasnât it? I met a lovely girl called Iona who talks in metaphors sometimes. Just⦠felt like trying it myself.â She coughed again, wondering if it might be possible to go back in time and unsay what she had said. A subject change seemed reasonable. âI wanted to ask, Millie, do you have plans to visit any of the other colony worlds?â
Millie stopped at a stall, salivating over something spicy. âDefinitely! Wouldnât mind touring some of them, especially Gran Manillo and Lyapunov. Too busy with my idol work right now, though. Gotta be successful first if I want to afford trips like that.â
She ordered a serving of spicy noodles, the delicious scent of chillies and cumin wafting over and making the other three lust for savoury munchies.
